Study tips and stress management for high school students

It’s that time of year again.

Exams are looming, preparation is fierce, teachers are stressed, energy is low and students are just trying to survive.

 

On the bright side, summer is here, holidays are mere weeks away and all this pressure will soon be forgotten.

 

That is all very well, but you’re probably wondering how you can get through this now.

 

Here are 5 tips to help you with your studying and managing your stress:

 

1. Start a study group.

The best way to learn something is to teach it. Start a small group with your friends and class mates where you each pick a topic or subject to teach to the group. Meet up during break time or on weekends. Ask your teacher to give you extra examples to work through. Doing this will make studying fun and you’ll have the support and accountability.

 

2. Manage your time properly.

Make a list of everything you have to do each day. Highlight the tasks that are urgent, put a time amount to each of them and then rank all of them in order of importance.

See the example below:

 

Tasks:

Maths homework pg 124 – 125 (30 min)   -2

Science project due Friday (1 hour)   -4

Study for English test for tomorrow (1 hour)   -1

Soccer practice (45 min)-5

TV (30 min)-6

Spend time with friends (45 min)-7

Study for History exam on Friday (1 hour)   -3

 

Start with task 1 and once you’ve completed that, move on to the next one.

Don’t forget to make time for friends or for relaxing. Use these tasks as treats for completing all your work.

 

3. When you feel overwhelmed, stop.

The brain can’t process any information when you are feeling this way. Take a moment to walk outside, stretch your legs, get a drink of water and take a few breaths, then try again.

 

4. Switch your phone off.

Rather use your phone as a reward for studying than as a distraction from it. If you have scheduled studying for 1 hour, switch your phone off for that hour while you study. Once the hour is up, you can turn your phone on and relax while you read your message and look at posts. You’ll feel less guilty about doing it.

 

5. Set goals for yourself.

Goals don’t work if you don’t write them down! Keep them simple and specific. For example, your goal may be to get 60% for your next exam. Start your goal like this: I need 70% for my English exam that I will write on the 2nd of November 2017. My current average is 50%. I need to work 20% harder so I will put in 30 minutes more everyday into practicing examples and studying for English.
